The Curriculum Vitae

You never get a second chance to make a first impression so here are some tips on how to ensure your CV gets noticed.

  • Ensure your CV is printed on good quality white paper

  • Make sure there are no spelling mistakes – attention to detail

  • Do not include a photograph unless asked to do so

  • CVs should be no more than 2 pages long

  • Do not use folders or covers - keep it simple

  • Contact details should be at the top (date of birth/marital status are not necessary)

  • Academic and Professional qualifications should follow contact details

  • When applying for a professional post, experience is of high importance and should appear before your qualifications

  • Universities should be named, schools are not necessary unless you have just left

  • Follow with an overview of yourself and your skills

  • Use bullet points and plenty of white space

  • Start with your most recent position and work backwards

  • Cover any periods of unemployment - no gaps

  • Include job titles, key functions, achievements, business type for each post

  • Only include salary details and reasons for leaving if asked to do so

  • School leavers/students should include memberships of school clubs/societies etc
