The Application Form

Experts say that you should ideally take a full day to fill out each page of an application form, but this is not always practical. Here are a few points to help with the task:

  • Check that you are still within the closing date

  • Get everything together before you start, e.g. pen, certificates, work history, stamp, envelope, dictionary etc.

  • Photocopy the form and use the photocopy to practice

  • Ask someone to check your practice form before transferring information

  • When you are happy with your answers transfer them neatly to the form

  • Put a blank piece of paper under your hand to avoid smudging the form

  • Read the instructions carefully and follow them, e.g. use blue/black ink

  • Write neatly and clearly and be concise – recruiters will see a lot of forms

  • State your qualifications/experience honestly

  • Answer every question even if the answer is “n/a” (not applicable)

  • Check spelling and grammar

  • Keep the practice form or a photocopy of the completed original for your own reference
